Rohypnol is a strong medication mainly prescribed for the short-term treatment of severe insomnia. However, it is not approved for medical use in many countries because it is occasionally misused to make an individual unable to resist sexual advances which can lead to sexual assault. It and can cause sleepiness, muscle relaxation, confusion, and amnesia. Rohypnol works by enhancing the effects of a neurotransmitter in the brain called gamma-aminobutyric acid (GABA), which has a calming effect on the central nervous system. Because of its potential for abuse and harmful effects, it is strictly controlled and not widely available for medical use in many parts of the world.
