the scientific study of diseases of the eyes and of the nervous system
Neuropathology is a field of medicine focused on studying diseases of the nervous system at a very detailed level. Neuropathologists, specialists in this field, analyze tissue samples from the brain, spinal cord, and peripheral nerves, which are nerves outside the brain and spinal cord, to diagnose neurological disorders. They investigate abnormalities in nerve cells, know as neurons, supporting cell called glial cells, and other components of the nervous system to understand the underlying causes of diseases such as Alzheimer's, Parkinson's, and brain tumors. Neuropathology plays a crucial role in advancing our understanding of neurological diseases, guiding treatment decisions, and developing new therapies to improve patient outcomes.
